Agra City has always remained as a center for education and learning. The advent of this education trend started with the Mughal Era. This was the time when Agra evolved as an important center of Islamic education. The decades that followed this era saw the city having many emerging literary figures. Some of the pioneer names included the names like Abul Fazl. The city was booming with the wide range of Urdu literature during this time. With the British rule, there was an introduction of western concepts into the education system of Agra. This was also the time when Agra started becoming a renowned center of Hindi literature as well. The year 1823 saw the establishing of Agra College, one of the oldest colleges in India. This college has emerged out of a Sanskrit school that was established by the Scindia rulers. Similarly, Agra University got established on 1st of July, 1927. This university is known to have served education to several colleges located across United Provinces, the Rajputana, the Central Provinces, and the entire North India. Later on, the legendary Agra University was rechristened as Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar University. Today, there are more than 140 Colleges affiliated to the University.
